The internet is a powerful tool for self-expression, but the landscape constantly shifts. LinkedIn, once a hub for genuine professional connection, now often feels like a mix of sales pitches and polished profiles that hide real challenges. I describe Linkedin as a “tale of two cities” in my most recent Linkedin article. This doesn't mean LinkedIn is obsolete – it simply means that to truly leverage its potential, you need a deeper understanding of how to use it in a way that aligns with your goals and level of authenticity.
The Evolving Role of LinkedIn
LinkedIn remains an essential space for building a professional presence and networking. However, alongside its original purpose, it has become a platform for content sharing, thought leadership, and even personal branding. The key to success on the platform lies in understanding its strengths, limitations, and how to navigate it in a way that feels true to you.
The Evolying You
There are two primary mindsets that shape our approach to the world: fixed and growth. Those with a fixed mindset believe that their skills and abilities are static, unable to significantly improve with effort. This leads to reliance on the same familiar tricks and a reluctance to expand their knowledge and perspectives. On the other hand, those with a growth mindset view challenges as opportunities for learning and development. This is why I invest heavily in exploring new technologies, tools, and methodologies. While some may not become permanent fixtures in my workflow, the experience gained during experimentation forever shapes how I think about and approach my work.
Tailoring Your Online Presence: From Networking to Deep Dives
Forget the one-size-fits-all approach. Your online strategy depends on your goals. Craving professional connections? Look no further than LinkedIn. But if you desire a deeper bond with your audience, explore platforms that encourage authenticity and vulnerability.
Finding the Right Platform Mix
The key lies in understanding each platform's strengths. LinkedIn excels at professional networking, while other platforms foster more personal connections. The choice is yours – leverage both for a well-rounded online presence.
Substack: A Catalyst for Deeper Engagement
My personal experience with Substack has been transformative. It's opened doors to discussions with people whovalue in-depth, nuanced ideas shared from a personal perspective. These conversations delve into complex topics that wouldn't fit neatly on LinkedIn.
This reflects a new era in journalism, where independent writers are taking the reins. Free from conflicts of interest, they can become subject-matter experts, fostering thriving communities around their passions. Take “The Profile” a Substack by a former Fortune journalist Polina Pompliano , as a prime example. By owning her destiny and crafting heartfelt stories, she built a loyal readership and a community that transcend deeper than a weekly magazine column. Have a listen to how Polina got her start.
Since coming so Substack a little over month ago, I have found a community of people who are “walking the walk and talking the talk” and are not afraid to put themselves out there and embrace the messiness of how and when their hard work will materialize.
These conversations often explore complex topics that LinkedIn cannot fully accommodate. Substack has proven to be a well-oiled machine for those seeking a deeper dive. It provides a foolproof way to promote your expertise, build a loyal community of like-minded people, and even turn on a revenue component if that aligns with your goals. The platform's focus on direct-to-consumer content offers a refreshing level of autonomy. Plus, the unexpected bonus when someone decides to financially support your work is both a pleasant surprise and incredibly motivating!
Some shout outs of columns I particularly enjoy that have expanded my world view:
I have become particularly fond of the following Substack Authors:
Unfiltered by Tim Denning - Helps you live with less stress and more freedom by improving every aspect of your lifestyle – money, work, productivity,
Eric Tash - Worthy For 30 - Where stories of leaders doing good while doing well are told
TJ Bennett - Desuckify Work - This is a safe bubble of parody, sarcasm and occasionally caustic wit, with lightly camouflaged pearls of wisdom sprinkled throughout.
Your Local Epidemiologist - Providing a direct line of public health science to you.
Simon Owens's Media Newsletter - A newsletter about how publishers create, distribute, and monetize their digital content.
The Power of Authenticity
The companies we love and support are made up of real people. When individuals within companies shed the corporate facade and express themselves openly, powerful connections happen. This transparency builds trust and humanizes brands. Customers want to engage with people, not just perfectly curated narratives.
Harness your authentic voice. It's a superpower in a world often filled with noise. As a child, you expressed yourself without inhibition. Reconnect with that inner child and allow it to inform how you show up online. The internet, at its best, enables us to build genuine communities with those who resonate with our values and stories.
Alternative Platforms: Expanding Your Reach
In addition to Substack, for deeper connection and more authentic expression, consider diversifying your online presence:
Quora: Showcase your expertise and build authority through answers on this credential-based platform.
TikTok: Embrace vulnerability and connect with a like-minded community through short-form videos.
Reddit: Dive into niche interests and honest conversations within its anonymous communities.
Medium: Publish long-form thought pieces and engage in meaningful discussions with readers.

Balancing Authenticity and Professionalism
Authenticity doesn't mean sharing everything. Consider your purpose for using each platform and adjust how you present yourself accordingly. LinkedIn can be a place for professionalism infused with personality, while other platforms might allow for more raw, unfiltered perspectives.
Authenticity as a Brand Strategy
The demand for transparency applies to businesses too. The #KelloggBoycott is a stark reminder that consumers hold brands accountable. Companies like Kellogg's can find redemption through deep introspection and realignment with genuine values.
Authenticity builds trust and fosters innovation. Empowering employees to be their genuine selves creates a thriving, human-centered culture. In this new landscape, embracing authenticity is essential for long-term success.
Guiding Principles: Ownership and Adaptability
As a coach and consultant, I prioritize empowering clients to take ownership of their success. This applies to your online presence too. Be proactive: don't rely on curated feeds; seek out authentic voices and spark meaningful connections.
The social media landscape is dynamic, requiring adaptability from individuals and businesses alike. Embrace evolution and stay attuned to changing consumer preferences to stay ahead of the curve.
Conclusion
LinkedIn can be a valuable tool in your professional arsenal but think of it as just one piece of the puzzle. Authenticity is the key to building true connections and unlocking your full potential. Customers want to buy into people and ideas they believe in, and this empowers businesses to create a positive impact. Be thoughtful about your presence, embrace vulnerability selectively, and remember that your authentic voice matters.
Thanks for the shoutout, Jay!
